What is an Artificial Eye? A Complete Guide for 2024

If you or a loved one has lost an eye due to surgery, injury, or a congenital condition, you have likely come across the terms artificial eye or ocular prosthesis. This comprehensive guide explains everything you need to know — simply, clearly and compassionately.

What Exactly is an Artificial Eye?

An artificial eye (medically called an ocular prosthesis) is a custom-crafted device designed to restore the natural appearance of a missing or severely disfigured eye. It is NOT a functional eye — it cannot restore sight. Rather, it is a cosmetic device that fits comfortably in the eye socket and looks virtually identical to a natural eye.

Important: An ocular prosthesis replaces the appearance of the eye, not vision. It is crafted to match your natural eye so closely that most people will be unable to tell the difference.

Who Needs an Artificial Eye?

Patients who benefit from an artificial eye include those who have undergone:

  • Enucleation — surgical removal of the entire eyeball
  • Evisceration — removal of the eye's internal contents while leaving the outer scleral shell
  • Orbital exenteration — removal of the eye and surrounding orbital contents
  • Congenital anophthalmia — born without an eye
  • Severe eye injury or trauma resulting in a blind, painful or disfigured eye
  • Phthisis bulbi — a shrunken, non-functioning eye

Types of Artificial Eyes Available in India

1. Custom Acrylic Prosthesis

The most common type. Made from medical-grade acrylic (PMMA). Each prosthesis is individually hand-painted by a skilled ocularist to exactly match the colour, iris pattern, blood vessels and size of the natural eye. Durable, lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear.

2. Scleral Shell

A thin shell worn over an existing blind, shrunken or disfigured eye. No surgery required. It slips on like a large contact lens and completely conceals the underlying eye. Ideal for patients who still have their eye in the socket.

3. 3D Printed Prosthesis

The latest advancement in ocular prosthetics. Digital photography of the natural eye creates a precise iris replica, which is then printed with extraordinary colour accuracy. 3D prostheses can be reproduced exactly if the original is damaged.

4. Silicone Prosthesis

Made from medical-grade silicone, providing an extremely soft, realistic appearance. Ideal for orbital prostheses and patients with sensitive socket tissue.

How is an Artificial Eye Made?

The process involves: initial consultation, socket impressions, colour-matching your natural eye, hand-painting the iris, fabrication using medical-grade materials, and a final fitting with follow-up. The entire process typically takes 2–5 working days.

How to Care for Your Artificial Eye

  • Remove at bedtime and clean gently with mild soap and warm water
  • Store overnight in cooled boiled water or sterile saline solution
  • Never use alcohol or harsh chemicals
  • Visit your ocularist every 6–12 months for professional polishing
  • Irrigate the socket gently with saline as needed
